About & Methodology

How the Risk Appetite quiz works and why we built it.

How It Works

The Risk Appetite quiz consists of 12 questions across 6 dimensions of risk tolerance. Each question presents 4 options that reflect increasing levels of risk comfort.

Your answers are scored on a scale, and the combined score across all dimensions determines which of 5 investor profiles best matches your current risk tolerance. The total score range is mapped to profiles that range from "Very Conservative" to "Very Aggressive."

The quiz evaluates both your ability to take risk (financial capacity, time horizon) and your willingness to take risk (loss tolerance, behavioral tendencies), as well as supporting factors like knowledge and return expectations.

The 6 Dimensions

Financial Capacity

Measures your ability to absorb financial losses without affecting your quality of life. This includes income stability, savings buffer, and existing obligations.

Time Horizon

Evaluates how long you plan to keep your money invested before needing it. Longer horizons generally allow for more risk-taking.

Loss Tolerance

Assesses your emotional response to seeing your portfolio decline. This is about how you feel, not just what you can afford.

Return Expectations

Gauges your desired returns relative to the volatility you're willing to accept. Higher expected returns typically come with higher risk.

Knowledge Level

Self-assessed familiarity with investment products and financial concepts. More knowledge often (but not always) correlates with higher risk tolerance.

Behavioral Tendencies

Examines whether you make impulsive or disciplined financial decisions. Your behavior under pressure is a strong predictor of investment outcomes.

Research Background

The methodology behind this quiz is inspired by established risk tolerance assessment frameworks in behavioral finance, including the work of Grable (2000) on financial risk tolerance and the multi-dimensional approach to investor profiling used by financial planning professionals.

Academic research consistently shows that risk tolerance is not a single number but a multi-faceted construct. By measuring six distinct dimensions, we provide a more nuanced picture of your relationship with investment risk than a simple "conservative to aggressive" scale.

The suggested asset allocations are general guidelines based on common financial planning principles and should be treated as educational starting points, not personalized recommendations.
